Greetings friends!
This is just a short note sharing three updates:
Announcing a name change for my original Substack from “Spaghetti Twisted Thoughts” to “The Creative Convergence”
RainMakers & ChangeMakers update
Created with Human Intelligence “Draw This In Your Style” Challenge with Nakivale Artists
Name Change
After more than a year on Substack, I think I have finally figured out what I'm doing here. I've changed my primary Substack newsletter name (3rd time is a charm!) from “Spaghetti Twisted Thoughts” to “The Creative Convergence.”
Welcome to The Creative Convergence, formerly known as Spaghetti Twisted Thoughts. A blend of essays, stories, original art, and unique perspectives on how creative expression can change people, communities, and the world.
Why Creative Convergence? First, I needed a name that allows for a bigger bucket of content. I’m writing, drawing, interviewing, and building community while doing it. Second “convergence” connotes the merging of distinct things into one whole.
That’s basically what I’m doing here in mid-life. Taking all of the things that I have been drawn to in my life and piecing them together into one whole. The term “convergence” also has a special place in my heart, borrowed from the permaculture world whose gatherings are often called “convergences”.
I will still post essays, stories and art here but with this name change, the bucket that contains my content will now enlarge to accommodate more work, particularly the launch of paid subscriptions for the Nakivale Young Refugee Artist Support Circle which will live here on The Creative Convergence Substack. Stay tuned for the launch of that circle in a few days!
I’ve also changed my handle from @SpaghettiTwistedThoughts to my name @EmilyKaminsky.
Update on RainMakers & ChangeMakers
It’s Day 36 of 61 days of “Small Art, Big Heart”, RainMakers & ChangeMakers series. Since my last post featuring the first 30 days, I’ve produced five additional portraits and posts on my RainMakers & ChangeMakers Substack. Here are some of my recent portraits.
Created with Human Intelligence “Draw This In Your Style” Challenge with Nakivale Artists
When Meta announced their AI policies, artists all across Facebook/Instagram were more than disappointed. The inability for U.S. users to opt out of having their content used for AI training has led many to leave these platforms in search of safer alternatives. In response, Beth Spencer of the
designed and shared a “Created With Human Intelligence” badge and invited artists to do the same in an act of solidarity and strength.Young refugee artists from Nakivale Refugee Settlement with my encouragement joined in today on the Created with Human Intelligence badge challenge.
Artists around the world depend on the income generated from their creative works. These artists are no different. AI produced art is a growing threat to their prospects of not only living but surviving through the sale of their art.
These young refugee artists (ages 10-22) from Congo and Burundi at Nakivale Young Talent Community are working hard to get their creative works out to the world. Through their art, they want to share their message of hope and resiliency, to impact the hearts and minds of people, and change the world’s perception of what refugees, particularly those in Africa, are capable of.
